Kalmunai Regional Directorate of Health Services was established in the year 2000 as the 26th Regional Directorate of Health Services under decentralisation process of the Ministry of Health. It functions under the guidance and supervision of the Provincial Directorate of Health Services Eastern Province.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

Kalmunai Regional Directorate of Health Services\u00a0is located in the Eastern coastal belt of Sri Lanka in Ampara district. It has an area of approximately 1250 square kilometers and has a population of around half a million. It is bounded by Batticaloa districts from north, Ampara RDHS region of Ampara district from west, Hambantota district from south and by the Indian Ocean from east. The borders of the district are Thuraineelavanai on the north, Kumana bird sanctuary on the south and lush green paddy fields sprawling along Ampara line on the west. Eastern coastal belt is the westernmost coast of the bay of Bengal.<\/p>

Geographically, Kalmunai RDHS division is further divided into 13 divisional Secretary\u2019s division (DS Divisions), each headed by a divisional secretary (previously known as an Assistant Government Agent). These DS divisions are further sub-divided into 331 Grama Niladhari divisions (GN Divisions). It has 13 Medical Officers of Health (MOH) divisions and these are are subdivided into 48 Public Health Inspector (PHI) areas and 157 Public Health Midwife (PHM) areas. Each MOH is headed by a Medical Officer of Health who reports to the Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS) Kalmunai. MOH directs preventive healthcare sector of the division through PHI and PHM.<\/p>

Regional Director of Health Services is the administrative focal point for 4 Base Hospitals (BH), 13 Divisional Hospitals (DH), 9 Primary Medical Care Units (PMCU), 13 Medical officers of health offices, Regional Medical Supply division, STD Programme and Chest programme etc. It has 3 Base Hospitals belonging to the line ministry in the region, namely, Akkaraipattu base hospital, Asharaff Memorial Hospital (AMH), and Kalmunai base hospital.<\/p>
