They perform similar functions, however the means by which the information is provided is the primary difference.\u00a0<br \/>mHealth is an abbreviation for mobile health that utilises mobile devices, such as a cellphone or a tablet, to support healthcare practices. With mHealth services, patients are able to log, store, and monitor their health records on their personal mobile devices. These applications are helpful in improving the efficiency of the delivery of healthcare information. mHealth applications can be helpful in research, and in patient care.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Health\u00a0tracking apps\u00a0on mobile devices are becoming increasingly popular, especially with the advent of Covid-19 pandemic. There are over 318,000+ health apps on the market. Popular health app example of mHealth include,\u00a0Fitbit,\u00a0GoogleFit,\u00a0Apple Heart Study etc.\u00a0mHealth has the ability for healthcare professionals to track the recovery of patients\u00a0<br \/>As hospitals and healthcare become more technologically reliant, more and more hospitals and health facilities have apps where you can access your records, make appointments, and ask questions from your mobile device.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>On the other hand, eHealth consists of a much broader understanding of healthcare practices supported by electronic processes. font-size: large;\">Efficiency- avoid unnecessary duplication and streamline the health care service between patient and provider.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Enhancing quality- providers have access to each other\u2019s notes to avoid duplicating any previous exams or studies.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Evidence based- there should still be scientific evidence on the basis of all information provided in eHealth.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Empowerment- it should empower patients to be a part of the medical process.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Encouragement- improving the relationship between healthcare provider and patient to work together in a partnership.\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Education- healthcare providers and patients have increased educational resources to learn and implement.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; Telehealth refers to both clinical and remote non-clinical services, including providing training and continued medical education for practitioners.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Telemedicine is solely referring to remote clinical service. The concept of telemedicine was started to treat patients who are located in remote or inaccessible areas. With the onset of Covid-19 pandemic, throughout last year with more and more services relying solely on virtual resources, it has served a greater purpose \u2013 providing people access to care without putting themselves at risk of contracting COVID-19. As more people gain access to these services, expectations around waiting room times, access to care, and convenience of care are changing.\u00a0<br \/><br \/>Understanding the ways the terms work together to create the big picture of virtual healthcare is crucial to understanding your access to care. The aim of all of these services is to provide greater quality, efficiency, and cost of care to both practitioners and patients. Telehealth is not a specific service, but a collection of means to enhance care and education delivery.\u201d<\/p><p>Part of the problem here is that federal and state agencies differ in how they define these applications. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cchpca.org\/ca-state-law-telemedicinetelehealth-definition\"><span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">California<\/span> <span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">law<\/span><\/a>\u00a0says:<br \/>\u201cThe mode of delivering health care services and public health via information and communication technologies to facilitate the diagnosis, consultation, treatment, education, care management, and self-management of a patient\u2019s health care while the patient is at the originating site and the health care provider is at a distant site. Telehealth facilitates patient self-management and caregiver support for patients and includes synchronous interactions and asynchronous store and forward transfers.\u201d<\/p><p>But the federal<span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ortholive.com\/blog\/Telehealth%2520is%2520defined%2520as%2520the%2520use%2520of%2520electronic%2520information%2520and%2520telecommunication%2520technologies%2520to%2520support%2520and%2520promote%2520long-distance%2520clinical%2520health%2520care,%2520patient%2520and%2520professional%2520health-related%2520education,%2520public%2520health%2520and%2520health%2520administration.\"><span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">Health Resources &amp; Services Administration<\/span><\/a>\u00a0says:<br \/>Telehealth is defined as the use of electronic information and telecommunication technologies to support and promote long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health and health administration.<\/p><p>Generally, telehealth encompasses the following technologies:<\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Live video, or synchronous (two-way) virtual visits\u00a0between a person and their caregiver using telecommunications technology.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Store-and-forward, or asynchronous virtual visits\u00a0that do not include the use of live feed, but instead use pre-recorded videos or digital images and the Internet to transmit this data.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Remote patient monitoring\u00a0includes a patient sensor or another on-site machine that transmits information virtually through the web to a remote caregiver.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">Mobile health, often called mHealth or eHealth,\u00a0is a virtual visit conducted via a cell phone or other digital handheld devices like a PDA or tablet and not on a desktop.<\/span><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-size: large;\">While these generally are the four categories that are widely recognised in the industry, some technologists also list a fifth category called\u00a0<span style=\"color: #5040ae;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chlpi.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/Telehealth-and-CHWs_March-2018.pdf\">\u201ceConsult,\u201d<\/a><\/span>\u00a0which uses telehealth technology to transmit clinical data between two medical providers, such as a primary care doctor and a specialist. This includes a wide array of clinical services using internet, wireless, satellite and telephone media.<\/p><p>The ATA uses telehealth and telemedicine as interchangeable terms, which supports the general usage of the two phrases as synonyms. Generally, across the industry, telemedicine and telehealth are considered to be remote or virtual healthcare technology to deliver care to patients.<\/p><p>How Does e-Health Differ from Telehealth and Telemedicine?E-Health was defined in a clinical study as far back as 2001 in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1761900\/\"><span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">Journal of Medical Internet<\/span> <span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">Research.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0In the research paper, the authors suggest that e-Health actually signifies a broadening of the telehealth category to integrate the technologies as a standard part of treatment. The authors suggested that when e-Health is broadly adopted as a descriptor for telemedicine applications, the technology will have reached widespread adoption in a similar way as e-commerce applications have become normalized in the retail sector. The article suggested the phrase was \u201can umbrella term\u2026to describe the combined use of electronic communication and information technology in the health sector.\u201d<\/p><p>Ironically, even health systems have their own definitions of these phrases. For example,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kumc.edu\/health-informatics\/hispc\/for-consumers\/patients\/what-is-e-health.html\"><span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">The University of<\/span> <span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">Kansas Medical Center<\/span><\/a>\u00a0says e-Health \u201crefers to the use of computers and networks like the Internet to store and manage your medical records, instead of paper files.\u201d\u00a0They use this term interchangeably with the phrase \u201chealth information technology\u201d (HIT).<\/p><p>Even educators are split on how to use these terms;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonvilleu.com\/blog\/health-informatics\/what-is-ehealth\/\"><span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">Jacksonville<\/span> <span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">University<\/span><\/a>\u00a0says,\u00a0\u201c<span style=\"color: #5040ae;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ortholive.com\/blog\/e-health-technology-and-data-security\">eHealth<\/a><\/span>\u00a0is where medicine\/healthcare and information technology converge.\u201d\u00a0They define forms of eHealth as:<\/p><ul><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Health informatics (HIT) for digital management of patient records.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Telemedicine to facilitate remote diagnoses and clinical care.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Electronic health records (EHR), a form of HIT.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\">Clinical decision support systems, which provide digital access to protocols to improve quality outcomes.<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a;\">Consumer health informatics, which includes smart digital devices to monitor exercise, weight, eating habits, and more.<\/span><br \/>\u200b<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: #2a2a2a; font-size: large;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/medicine-and-dentistry\/e-health\"><span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">Science<\/span> <span style=\"color: #5040ae;\">Direct<\/span><\/a>\u00a0also includes the application of health interoperability between data exchanges, such as Health Information Exchanges (HIE) under the eHealth banner.
